This is so cute. A charity in Australia are asking people who love knitting and animals to knit wooly jumpers for sick penguins.
Philip Islands rescue centre is using the knitted jumpers to keep penguins warm after they have been rescued. The pengunis have usually fallen victim to oil spills and other similar leaks from fishing vessels.
‘There’s a lot of hidden creativity out there,’ explained Lyn Blom, an employee of the foundation.
The clever thing about the jumper idea is that as well as keeping the penguins warm, they also prevent the penguin from trying to clean the oil off themselves which could potentially poison them.
The main problem with the oil is that it mats the penguins feathers which prevents them from being waterproof as well as damaging their natural levels of insulation.
For those wishing to donate a jumper, the island’s Penguin Foundation has created a handy knitting pattern guide..
