Light Art: Turning Coconuts Into Jewels

Obsessed with Light Art, artist Vainius has been using coconuts, cork and suede to create lamps. These lamps not only light up a room – they enable the light to dominate it. These handcrafted works of art mesmerize anyone in their presence – often causing one to stare at the wall as though they were staring at stars.

Inspired by an artist named Calabarte, an artist who produces pieces based on light, Vainius began creating his own version using materials familiar and inspiring to him. The more he worked on them, the more his passion grew for precision and beauty in his craft.

After much careful shaving, waxing, drilling and polishing, the coconut shines as brilliant as a jewel. The shininess of the shell contrasts with the opaque and light-swallowing suede – giving the lamp an overall appearance of elegance. The jewel is appealing and intriguing while the body, appearing as a serpent, invites fear. Indeed, the lamp is art unto itself, let alone the beautiful patterns illuminating from it.
